Nicholas was born about 1836 in Brigham, Cumberland, England^[1].

He was the son of John Dockeray and Charlotte Ray who were married in 1825.

In 1866 Nicholas married Mary Smith at Cockermouth, Cumberland.^[2] They were the parents of:
