Biography

Laurence Dobbie was born in Scotland.

Laurence or Lawrence was born on 20 March 1852 at Rossie Island, Craig, Forfarshire, Scotland^[1], and baptised on 4 April the next month at Montrose^[2]. He was the son of Alexander Dobbie forester and Euphemia Allan.

In 1861 he was living with his parents, Alexander (a forester aged 55) and Euphemia (50), and two siblings - William (a wright aged 18) and Diana (a scholar aged 13) - at Macdonalds Land, Craig, Forfarshire^[3]. He was a scholar aged 9 born at Montrose, Forfarshire. In 1871 he was living with his parents, Alexander (a former forester aged 68) and Euphemia (60), and two siblings - Alexander (an unmarried ship carpenter aged 30.) and Dianna (a power loom weaver aged 23) - at Rossie Island, Craig, Forfarshire^[4]. He was a labourer aged 19.

He married Ann Coliston on 4 October 1873 at Montrose, Forfarshire^[5]. Lawrence and Ann had nine children.

In 1881 he was living with his wife Ann (28) and four children - Alexander (6) and Helen B (5), both scholars, David E D (3) and Ann (1) - at 11, Ferry Street, Montrose, Forfarshire^[6]. He was a salmon fisher aged 28.

Lawrence died on 28 January 1915 aged 62 years at Montrose, and his death was registered there^[7].
