William Theodore Ditty was the son of John & Catharine Elizabeth (Woodside) Ditty. A carpenter by trade, he stood 5' 7" tall and had dark hair and blue eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in Harrisburg October 16, 1862, and mustered into federal service there November 5, 1862, as a corporal with Co. H, 173rd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 17, 1863. He then voluntarily enlisted in Harrisburg March 17, 1864, and mustered into federal service there May 12 as a sergeant with Co. C, 184th Pennsylvania Infantry. Captured at Petersburg, Virginia, June 25, 1864, and paroled at Vicksburg, Mississippi April 21, 1865. Absent at muster-out, no doubt because he was either at home on furlough or in a hospital.
