Biography

Maria Catharina was born 11 August 1825 in Oberhaugstett, OA Calw, Württemberg. She was the daughter of farmer Johann Georg Dittus and Maria Magdalena Kohlmann.^[1]

In about 1840 she was married to a gentleman with the surname Hoffman and 24 Aug 1843 • Bavaria, Bayern, Germany they had a child Katharina. Between 1850-1854 Marie Katharina Dittus immigrated to the United States. In Dec of 1855 she is living in Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio with her husband Frederick Schmidt/Smith where ther son John Q is born. Their daughter Mary Magdalene was also born in Ohio in about 1857. Sometime before 1864 the family moves to Rhinebeck, Dutchess, New York where their daughter Otilie is born. Their son James F. Smith was also born in Rhinebeck 23 Jul 1867. Sometime before 1870 the family moves to 1870 • Rondout Village, Ulster, New York. By 1875 they are residing in Kington, Ulster, New York. Several census documents indicate that Marie Katharina Dittus (Hoffman?) Schmidt was married and widowed twice, the second time when Frederick dies 9 May 1900. She passed away 5 September 1910 and is buried with her husband, Frederick in Montrepose Cemetery, Kingston, Ulster, New York.

The 1910 census indicates that Katherine was married for 46 years. Frederick died in 1900, making the date 1854. This is one year prior to the birth of their first child and seems to verify that date.
