Walter Charles Dillon was born on 27th April 1904 in Paddington, New South Wales, Australia. He was the son of Walter Dillon and Elizabeth Wright. [1]
Walter had enlisted in the Commonwealth Military Force about 1925. On 19th October 1939 he was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Second Australian Imperial Force, Australia's specially-created overseas expeditionary force, and allocated to the 2/1st Australian Infantry Battalion. [2] After being promoted to Captain he was appointed officer commanding C Company, leading the company in the battalion's first campaign, in Libya on 3rd January 1941. About 7:15am heavy artillery shelling landed in the company area, seriously wounded several men, including Walter. He was evacuated through casualty clearing stations to the general hospital, before being repatriated to Australia. There he received years of treatment on his wounds. He was discharged on 10th June 1945.
Back home, Walter married Kathleen Lindeman in 1943 in Sydney, New South Wales. [3]
Aged about 76 years, he passed away in 1980 in New South Wales. [4]
