Biography

7. Esther Caroline Tharp was born 22 Feb 1849 (MEN and gravestone). She married Frederick Henry Dierking on 11 Apr 1870 (CMR) in Hardin (JGD). Frederick was born 26 May 1849 (per gravestone; the 1900 census gives May 1848) in Steimbke, Hanover, Prussia (JGD). His father was Frederick William Dierking who was born around 1821 in the Hanover area of Prussia (now Lower Saxony?) - JGD. He came to the U.S. between 1852 and 1854 to the port of New Orleans (JGD). Traveling with him was son Frederick Henry, three uncles, and possibly a stepmother. Both served in the Union Army during the Civil War (JGD). Frederick Henry (20) and Esther (21) are in the 1870 census. In the 1880 census they would have been in Cherokee, KS as children born 1878-1882 were born there (MEN). Children born 1884-1888 were born in Hillcrest, Ogle County, IL (MEN). Fred (52) and Esther (51) are in the 1900 Calhoun census living next door to Esther’s sister and brother-in-law, Emily and Edmund Likes. Per the 1900 census, Fred Dierking was born in May 1848 and Esther was born in Feb 1849. They’d been married 30 years and had 12 children with 11 still living. The child who died was Alma G. Dierking, b. 13 Nov 1876, d. 25 Apr 1879 and buried in Summit Grove Cemetery (CCB). [For some reason MEN lists this child as Certia A. Dierking although the birthdate is the same as for Alma.] Fred died 27 Mar 1933 and Esther died 29 May 1927. Both are buried in Summit Grove Cemetery (CCB). Nine of their 11 children were living with them in 1900:

John F. Dierking, 28, b. Mar 1872. He married Estella Cloninger on 15 Nov 1900 (CMR). Oliver J. Dierking, 25, b. Feb 1875. He married Pearl Johnson on 22 Aug 1910 (CMR). He died in 1940 and is buried in Summit Grove Cemetery (CCB). MEN indicates one of the Dierking sons had three children, but it is unclear which son he was referring to. I’m listing those children here due to when Oliver and Pearl were married and the birthdate of the eldest child:

Nolan Dierking The SSDI has Nolan Dierking born 20 Aug 1911 and dying Jun 1979 in Jerseyville. Bonnevere Dierking Lotis Dierking MEN indicated that she was not married.

Fredrick W. Dierking, 22, b. Apr 1878. He was married to Emma. Per his gravestone he was born in 1878 and died in 1954. Per her gravestone she was born in 1880 and died in 1941. Both are buried in Summit Grove Cemetery (CCB). I have not found a Calhoun marriage record for them. Arthur G. Dierking, 19, b. Aug 1880. Per MEN he never married. Per his gravestone he was born 29 Aug 1880 and died 9 Feb 1907. He is buried in Hardin City Cemetery (CCB). Myrtle A. Dierking, 18, b. May 1882. Per MEN she never married, and he lists her name as “A. Myrtle.” The “Myrtle A.” is from the 1900 census. Her gravestone gives her birthdate as 23 May 1880 and the year may be in error. She died 3 Apr 1968 and is buried in Summit Grove Cemetery. Her gravestone indicates she was an Army nurse in WWI (CCB). Roy C. Dierking, 16, b. Mar 1884. Per MEN he was ‘not married’ as opposed to ‘never married.’ This suggests he may have been divorced. I have not found a Calhoun marriage or cemetery record. Olga F. Dierking, 14, b. Aug 1885. MEN lists her as “F. Olga,” rather than “Olga F.” Her gravestone also gives her name as “F. Olga.” The “Olga F.” is from the 1900 census. Per her gravestone she was born 24 Aug 1885 and died 15 Sep 1916. She is buried in Summit Grove Cemetery (CCB). She never married. Golda E. Dierking, 13, b. Apr 1887. She married Samuel A. Livingston on 5 Oct 1914 (CMR). Per MEN they had the following children:

Samuel Livingston (twin) David Livingston (twin) Esther Livingston Dwight Livingston

Harrison F. Dierking, 11, b. Oct 1888. I have no additional information on him.

The two children not living in the home in the 1900 census were: Lula M. Dierking, b. 9 Apr 1871 (MEN) who married Charles Temple on 3 May 1891 (CMR). In 1900 they are living in Peoria. Charles is 30, born Sep 1869, and is a lawyer. Lula is 29, born Apr 1871. They have been married 9 years and have had two children with 2 still living. The children are:

Violet Temple, 3, b. Mar 1897. She never married (MEN). Pansy Temple, 8 months, b. Sep 1899. Pansy died in infancy (MEN). Per MEN the following children were born after 1900: Paul Temple, (twin) b. 26 Sep 1903 Wesley Temple, (twin) b. 26 Sep 1903 Arthur Carradine Temple He died in infancy (MEN).

Per MEN, one of the Temple twins had two daughters, but he doesn’t specify which twin. The daughters names were:

Anna Temple Nina Temple

Nellie C. Dierking, b. 5 Sep 1873 (MEN) who married Francis Bennett on 31 Aug 1898 (CMR). They are in the 1900 census living next to Nellie’s aunt and uncle, Emily and Edmund Likes. Francis is 28, born Feb 1872. Nellie is 26, born Sep 1873. They have been married two years and have no children. Nellie died in 1949 and is buried in Hardin City Cemetery (CCB). Nellie and Francis had a daughter (MEN):

Eleanor Bennett who married Richard Beuttell
