Biography

George Dickson was born August 18, 1810, and baptised September 2, 1810 at Ormiston, Scotland. His parents were George Dickson and Janet Bell.[1]

On April 24, 1848, in Edinburgh, Scotland, George Dickson, spirit merchant, married Alison Thin. Both resided in St. Cuthberts parish in Edinburgh.[2] They had (at least) three children:

  • George Dickson, born about 1856 in Australia.[3] George died on August 23, 1862 in Ormiston, Scotland.[4]
  • John Dickson, born in 1860 at Dunolly, Victoria, Australia.[5] John died at age 14 days in Dunolly.[6]
  • James Thin Dickson, born December 25, 1866 at Ormiston, Scotland.[7]

In the 1851 census, George Dickson (age 38, spirit dealer, born in Ormiston) was enumerated on Carrubbers Court of Edinburgh, Scotland, with his wife Ellen Dickson (age 26, born in Edinburgh).[8] Note that his wife's name was incorrectly recorded.

George Dickson (age 42, gardener) and Mrs. Dickson (age 28) sailed on the Catherine Glen from Glasgow, arriving at Port Philip, Victoria, Australia on August 14, 1853.[9] But they returned to Scotland in either 1860 or early 1861.

In the 1861 census, George Dickson (age 51, gardener, born in Ormiston) was enumerated on High Street, Ormiston, with his wife Alison Dickson (age 36, born in St Cuthberts, Edinburgh), and their son George Dickson (age 4, born in Australia).[3]

In the 1871 census, George Dickson (age 60, gardener, born in Ormiston) was enumerated in the village of Ormiston with his wife Alis Thin (age 46, born in Edinburgh), and their son James T. Dickson (age 4, born in Ormiston).[10]

In the 1881 census, George Dickson (age 70, gardener, born in Ormiston) was enumerated at Honey Grove in Ormiston parish, with his wife Alice Dickson (age 56, born in Edinburgh), and their son James Dickson (age 14, born in Ormiston).[11]

George Dickson, gardener, died on October 15, 1885, in Ormiston, Scotland. He was the widower of Ellison Thin, and the son of George Dickson and Janet Bell. The informant was his son James T. Dickson.[12]
