Robert Dickmann and Olga Kahlfeld married 29 June 1932 in Neustadt, Lithuania. [4][5]
They lived in a small town nearby that they referred to as Schiaudwitten (German). Robert and their eldest children were born in the same town; now called Šiaudviečiai, Lithuania, with a population of 26.[7]

1941 Resettlement
On 15 June 1940 the USSR invaded Lithuania.[12][13]Under a January 1941 resettlement agreement between Germany and the Soviet Union, persons of German extraction repatriated from Lithuania to Germany and vice versa. [14]

The Dickmanns were together in West Prussia (1944-1946) and Mecklenberg, Germany (1946-1949) before spending a few months in a refugee camp on Goradorfastrasse, Berlin-Mariendorf, Germany (Dec 1949-Jun 1950). From there they moved to an apartment where they stayed until 1956. [3][15] [16]

1956 Emigration
In 1956, the Dickmann family (except Herta) arrived in Waterloo, Iowa under The Refugee Relief Act of 1953. [17][18][19]

"WASHINGTON UP! - Eighteen refugees from Europe bound for Iowa are aboard the Navy transport General Langfit scheduled to arrive at New York Thursday, the U. S. State Department announced Wednesday. They are among 1,168 persons coming to the United States under the Refugee Relief Act. Among those bound for Iowa and U. S. citizens sponsoring them are Robert Dickmann, 49, laborer from Lithuania; his wife,. Olga, 43, and their children, Helmut, 10, Adolf, 14, and Robert. Sponsor, William H. Pipho, Cedar Falls, and Lutheran Refugee Service."

1962 Naturalization

"Fifty two persons become US citizens in a ceremony in Cedar Rapids Wednesday in Cedar Rapids Federal Court. Presiding over the naturalization hearing was Federal District Judge John W. Delehant of Omaha... Largest nationality group represented was Germany, with eleven, second was Canada, with five, third was Greece, with four…. Robert and Olga Emilie Dickmann, Cedar Falls, Lithuania." [21]Robert signed the Oath of Allegiance on 23 May 1962.[4][22]
