Biography

William Hutton Dickie was born on 31 August 1861, at Culross, Fife, Scotland. His parents were William Dickie and Jane Cunningham Inglis. Jane's mother was Agnes Hutton, which is how William would have acquired his middle name. William grew up in Scotland and in 1881 his family was living at St. Ninians, Stirlingshire, Scotland. His siblings were Ann Hutton Dickie, b. 1851; Isabella Cousin Dickie, b. 1857; Caroline Jane Dickie, b. 1859; Martha Mary Agnes Dickie, b. 1863; Elisabeth Dickie, b. 1866; and Thomas Inglis Dickie, b. 1869. (At this time (2022) there has been little genealogical work on this family, thus it is still uncertain when and where the other family members lived and died.)

On 19 September 1893 William married Katherine Dewar in Dunblane, Perthshire, Scotland. The couple had the following children:

William Duncan Dickie (1894-1976)
Margaret Annie Campbell Dickie (1896-1992)
Jean Dickie (1898-1991)
John Jack Dickie (1899-ca 1899)

In the 1901 Scotland census, William's occupation was potato salesman. According to the 1911 Canada census the Dickie family emigrated to Canada in 1904.

There is a 1906 Alberta Homestead Record for a William H Dickie for a location northwest of Calgary located between Bergen and Elkton. It was a Declaration of Abandonment because the location was "not suitable for cultivation."

The 1906 prairie census shows the family living in Calgary on 9th Avenue East. By the time of the 1911 Canada census, the family had moved to their permanent location in the immigrant community of Bridgeland-Riverside. At the time their address was 424 - 2nd Avenue North which eventually came to be called Meredith Road N.E. (N.B. One can see below the confusing name changes in the entries from the Henderson directories.) The family would have been living across the street from the Riverside Iron Works. William's occupation in the 1911 census was labourer, CPR shops. He was to remain with the CPR for the rest of his working life.

In 1920 William's wife died suddenly in Victoria, B.C., where she had journeyed for her health. William continued to live in the same location until he also died unexpectedly on Christmas Eve, 1937. William and Katherine are buried at Union Cemetery.

Obituaries

From The Calgary Albertan (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) 27 Dec 1937, Mon, page 9; as found on Newspapers.com:

GIFT-BRINGER FINDS DEATH
W. H. Dickie Found Dead By Son On Christmas Eve
Receiving no answer when he knocked on the door when he called late Christmas Eve to deliver some gifts, William Dickie forced his way into the home of his aged father, and found his father lying dead in the kitchen, victim of a heart attack.
William Hutton Dickie, Sr., who was 76 years old, had lived by himself in his home at 424 Meredith Road since 1920. His son, who had visited the house earlier in the evening, and had received no answer when he knocked at the door, called again about midnight, and when he still received no answer, forced the door and entered.
Finding his father lying dead on the kitchen floor, Mr. Dickie telephoned the police station, and Detective George Gilbert and Constable J. H. Woodworth, answered the call. They called Coroner Dr. George R. Johnson, who stated the man had died of a heart attack. While unable to say definitely how long he had been dead, Dr. Johnson said it had been several hours at least.
"Born in Culrose, Scotland, Mr. Dickie came to Alberta 33 years ago. He had worked for the C.P.R. at Ogden until his retirement about six months ago. He is survived by his son, William, of Calgary, two daughters, Mrs. George Skinner, Port Townsend, Washington and Mrs. Max Musser, Warren, Ohio, and one sister in Scotland.
Funeral services, in charge of A. M. Shaver, will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m., at Park Memorial Chapel, with Rev. Dr. W. P. Kelloway officiating.
