Preceded by Stephen VII |
125th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church March 931 – January 936 |
Succeeded by Leo VII |
John was born to a noble family. His mother Marozia was a powerful Roman senator. It is said John's father was Marozia's lover, Pope Sergius III and not her husband Alberic I of Spoleto.[1]
It was Marozia's political influence that enabled John to be consecrated pope at the age of 21 years, on 15 March 931.[1][2] As his mother was the de facto leader of Rome he did her bidding until she was overthrown by her own son Alberic II.[1]
Platina[3] states:
Alberic II confined Pope John XI to the Lateran where he eventually died aged 25 years.[1]
