Leo was born in Rome[1] in the region around the Clivus Argentarius, to a noble family. His father was John who held the office of protonotary or superintendent of the Roman public school for scribes in the papal court.[2]
According to Platina[3]: Leo, a Roman, [was] a keeper of the archives in the Lateran.
He was elected pope on 4 December 963 and consecrated on 6 December 963.[1]
