Biography

Samuel Dewey was a farmer in the Connecticut Colony. [1]

Samuel Dewey was born 5 Jul 1704 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut to Nathaniel Dewey (abt.1672-aft.1717) and Margaret (Burroughs) Dewey (1677-abt.1718).[2]

Samuel Allen married Elizabeth (Allen) Dewey (1712-) on 6 Mar 1731/2 in Hebron, New London, Connecticut. [3] Another source says 6 March 1732 in Lebanon, New London Connecticut. [1] A third source also says the marriage date was in 1732. [4]

From their union, at least six children were born in Lebanon, Connecticut:

  1. Samuel Dewey Jr. (1732-1801)
  2. Desire (Dewey) Phelps (1734-1827)
  3. Elijah Dewey (1736-1773)
  4. Jeremiah Dewey (1738-abt.1833)
  5. Elizabeth (Dewey) Cogswell (1740-1812)
  6. Nathan Dewey (1742-1779)

At a town meeting in nearby Hebron, Connecticut, held on 28 February 1737,:

"Liberty was Granted to Samuel Dewey to make a Dam across ye Brook in Ebenr Wilcoxes Farm in order to Hang a Grindstone to Grind Scythes &c ..." [1]

Samuel Dewey died after 1742.

Research Notes

A son born in 1742 seems to be the last entry we can find for Samuel in the Lebanon records. Some unsourced online trees show death dates of 1742 (probably means after 1742) and 6 Mar 1784.

The only source for the 6 Mar 1784 date is a Sons of the American Revolution membership application dated 1967. The application lists two books for its sourcing: The Dewey Family History published 1898 and The Order of the Founders and Patriots of America, Register of 1902, but neither gives a death date for Samuel Dewey.

Without further confirming information the death date remains unknown.

Thank you Rebecca. The SAR membership application does show that information. However, thus far I am unable to find any confirmation for that date. Please see the notes that I have added to the profile.
