Some people think one Thomas Hoe is his father, but I don't know that for sure. (Sources for this thought that John's biological parents weren't married would be the scanned image of John's christening record, which I have yet to see, and the Lincolnshire bastardy index, which I think I did see once, but I didn't consider it a strong enough connection to verify that it was talking about the same Eliza and the same John; and Thomas Hoe was only listed as the putative father there anyway.)
Eliza's true birth surname is also sometimes debated, but I haven't seen much evidence for it being anything other than Dewey, and I have seen a death record of one of her sons that listed her maiden name as Dewey (you have to look at the original image to see that it explicitly says maiden name).
Anyway, as a direct patriarchal descendant of John Cook Dewey I've taken the Big Y-700 test at Family Tree DNA. My confirmed Y-DNA haplogroup results came in on 13 May 2023 as R-Y15103 (the path to that haplogroup on that date was R-M207>M173>M343>L754>L761>L389>P297>M269>L23>L51>P310>L151>P312>Z46516>ZZ11>U152>L2>Z258>Z367>L20>Z1909>S10708>Y15103).
We need more test-takers at Family Tree DNA (even if they only take the cheapest test; they are able to match you up with your closest relatives pretty well even with that, somehow; they don't just give you your haplogroup and call it good). If you're a Cook descendant of William Cook, please take a Y-DNA test at Family Tree DNA (ideally the Big Y-700, but any test should yield important results). After you take the test, please let us know your results! I know Cook descendants of William Cook and Eliza Dewey are living today (I've seen some of them on Ancestry.com as my autosomal DNA matches there, presumably via Eliza). So, we can figure this out. We just need people to test.
A descendant of Joseph Raymond Dewey has tested at the Y-37, Y-25 and Y-12 levels. He's listed as my top match, currently. I'm a grandson of Veril Edward Dewey (Joseph Raymond Dewey's brother). They are sons of John Cyrus Dewey, Jr. (and Nellie Lorena Thurman); he is the son of John Cyrus Dewey, Sr. (and Sarah Annie Child), who is the son of John Cook Dewey and Mary Eliza Allen. Autosomally, I've already verified my connection to descendants of John Cyrus Dewey, Sr., descendants of John Cook Dewey, and descendants of Eliza Dewey. So, the haplogroup I gave should apply to all of John Cook Dewey's biological father's descendants. I haven't found an autosomal connection to William Cook's parents, yet (but Ancestry DNA can potentially find ancestors so far back). I should ask William Cook's descendants if they've found a connection to them.
