Biography
The son of Hugo Dewey, Sr. (1752-1833) and Hannah Sprague (1757-1813), Charles Dewey was born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts[citation needed] in 1800. His siblings included:

Charles married three times, marrying Frances Bolton (1805-1846), the daughter of Dr. Thomas Bolton and Finnell Frances Clark, in Great Barrington, Massachusetts on April 7, 1825[1] and having ten known children together:

He purchased land for farming in Genesee County, New York.[2] Widowed in 1846, Charles married Venus (Andrews) Nearing (1796-1860), about whom nothing is know, residing together in Byron, New York.[3] and having one known daughter together, Alice Dewey, born in 1858. In his household in 1850, in addition to his second wife and his children, was Eunice Nearing, age 19, and three farm laborers: 50-year-old Scottish immigrant Malcolm McPherson, 19-year-old James Knickerbocker, and 24-year-old Richard White. Widowed a second time in 1860, Charles lived that year at his farm in Byron, in a household that included five of his children and three farm laborers: 30-year-old Nicholas Jacob, 30-year-old Elizabeth Morse, and 22-year-old Sarah Chandler.[4]
Charles later remarried, marrying Polina H. Johnson (1818-), about whom nothing is known, being enumerated together, along with Charles' two youngest daughters, Louise and Alice, in the home of Charles' son, William Dewey, and his family in Wellsville, New York.[5] In 1880, Charles and Polina lived together in Byron, New York,[6] in a household that included 15-year-old William Taft, a farm laborer.
Charles Dewey passed away in Byron, New York[7] at the age of 81 and is buried at Byron Cemetery.[8]
