Luke was born about 1813 in Oneida County to Amasa and Dolly TUTTLE Dewey, who originally came to Whitestown from Massachusetts.
Luke died on the Oriskany battlefield site, exactly 100 years after the Battle of Oriskany. This is not coincidental; Mr. Dewey was participating in a reenactment of the battle on its centennial anniversary when he was overcome with a fatal stress of unknown origin. The exact cause of death is unknown. There was great controversy surrounding care of Mr. Dewey, as he was known to be fond of the drink and it was alleged that he was drunk at the time. Other witnesses claimed that he had been very sober for quite some time and that he was not overcome with alcohol. Regardless, Mr. Dewey was taken to a barn after he collapsed on the field, and did not receive medical attention prior to his death.
