Rupert Carthalo Dewey was born 7 June 1870 to Azel Palmer Dewey and Roxania Carver in Chester Township, Minnesota.[1]
Rupert and Nora Alice Pool married 18 February 1893 in Prescott, Wisconsin.[2]
He passed away 27 June 1928 in Oakland, California.
Military services for Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Carthalo Dewey, Assistant Quartermaster in Charge of the United States Marine Corps Quartermaster Depot in San Francisco, will be held Friday morning at an hour to be set by brother officers. Lieutenant Colonel Dewey died last evening of pneumonia at his home in Oakland. His widow and two daughters, who hadn't been apprised of his death today, are seriously ill. Nora Alice Dewey and the elder daughter, Miss Jocelyn Dewey, are suffering with pneumonia and the case of the latter is so serious that but slight hope is held for recovery. Miss Priscilla Dewey, aged 11, is ill with measles. Lieutenant Colonel Dewey was born in Minnesota in 1870. He was a graduate of the University of Minnesota and had seen service in the Spanish-American war and in the Philippines. It was as a First Lieutenant in the Thirteenth Minnesota infantry, volunteers, that he was first mustered into service. In. December of the same year that he was promoted to a Captaincy. With his company he was mustered out in March, 1899. He entered the Marine Corps in 1900 and since then has served continuously, in Guam and at Cavite, Philippines, before coming to San Francisco to take charge of the Quartermaster Depot. Lieutenant Colonel Dewey possessed the admiration and love of all the men who served under him. An expression of this feeling was demonstrated at a recent birthday when he was fairly overwhelmed by the gifts from his men. To an equal degree he held the respect of his fellow officers.[3]
