Biography

William Hyggen Devoe was born about 1849, possibly in Canada. The 1881 England Census lists his birthplace as North America. His marriage record lists his father as Lewis Corantine Devoe, Carpenter.

There are two criminal records for a William Devoe, one on 17 February 1869: William (age about 20) was imprisoned for four months Lancashire, England, for larceny and feloniously breaking out of dewlling house.^[1], and again on 23 February 1870: William (age about 21) was imprisoned for six months for larceny before convicted of felony in Lancashire, England.^[2] Not 100% sure these offenses belong to this William.

When William was about 26 he married Susannah M Bowden on 3 February 1875 in St. Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England.^[3]

In the 1881 census William (age about 32) was living in Toxteth, Lancashire, England. His occupation was mariner. The family consisted of his wife Susan (age 26), son William H (age 7), and daughter Rosalie (age 4). William's aunt Eliza Devoes (age 46) was living with them.^[4]

William died between 1881 and 1891, as his wife Susannah is listed as a widow in the 1891 census.
