Born: Jonathan was born on August 28, 1755 in Goshen, Litchfield, Connecticut.[1] [2]
Married: Jonathan married Lydia Williams about 1780.[2]
Military Service: Jonathan served as a Private in the Revolutionary War. He was a member of Captain Townsend's company (Tourrandz Company) and Colonel Kilian Van Rensselaer's Fourth Regiment (Schemerhorn's Company), NY State Militia. [2][3][4][5] [6]
Leases: In the History of Rensselaer Co., New York it is alleged that in the year 1795 Stephen Van Rensselaer executed a Deed conveying lands in Nassau to Jonathan Devereaux.[7] The Deed does not appear in the Rensselaer or Albany County Deed Books, but other records show a "[l]ease of farm in Stephentown, 21 3/10 acres. April 7, 1795" [8] The same records show as "[l]ease of farm in Rensselaerwyck, 70 acres. September 7, 1790." and "[l]ease of farm in Rensselaerwyck, 33 8/10 acres. December 29, 1791. Exchanged for new lease with 16 additional acres."[8]
Died: Jonathan died about 1803 in North Nassau, Rensselaer Co., New York.[9] The DAR has the death information as before May 15, 1804, in Schodack, Renseelaer, New York.[5]
Purported Last Will and Testament: Herrick and Haight assert in their book A Genealogy of the Family Devereaux of the Line of Jonathan Devereaux, Born in Wethersfield, Conn. November 7, 1716 that Jonathan Devereaux executed his Last Will and Testament on September 29, 1802, leaving to his wife Lydia, among other things, 'my lame mare, with a good new saddle and bridle'. The Will reportedly includes legacies to all ten of Jonathan's children except Hosea who may have received his share before Jonathan's death.[2] An independent record of the Will has not been located.
1827 Deed In Rensselaer County Arising from Jonathan Devereaux' Estate:
By Instrument dated April 17, 1827, Seymour Devereaux; Elijah Devereaux; and Epaphroditus Devereaux and his wife Mitty, assigned several leases from Stephen Van Rensselaer to "our father Jonathan Devereaux, Junior", including a September 7, 1790 lease of 20 ac; a February 17, 1794 lease of 60 acres, and any other leases or rights "our father Jonathan Devereaux, died seized or possessed", whether real of personal, to Stephen Devereaux of Nassau, Rensselaer, New York, subject to a one-third interest in land owned and occupied by "our mother Lydia Devereaux ."[10]
Herrick and Haight write: "The year before he died, Jonathan purchased land in Oswego County, N. Y., for his sons Erastus and John, who soon removed thither as did their sister Lydia, wife of John Clemons. Other children remained for some years longer in Nassau. Gradually Stephen and Hosea bought out the shares of their brothers and sister. There is an old survey map still in existence showing the property in this period before 1820. One half is marked off to Stephen and one half to Hosea. Finally Stephen too sold to Hosea who then remained in sole possession."[2]
