Biography

Frances (Derthick) Outcalt is buried in Greenwood Cemetery, Rockford, Illinois.

Frances Derthick was born in 1853 in Belvidere, Illinois as "Cordelia," often shortened to "Delia." They grew up in Belvidere, Illinois.^[1] As a teenager, they worked as a domestic servant in the Keeler household.^[2]

They married Samuel Hudson in 1871 in Boone County.^[3] Together, they had two children: Edna (b. 1873) and Margaret Mabel (b. 1874). In 1880, the Hudsons lived in Forreston, Illinois.^[4]

Near the end of 1880, Frances ran away from their family and resettled in Waupun, Wisconsin, dressed as a man and using the name Francis "Frank" Dubois.^[5] They worked as a painter. Frances married Gertrude Fuller in December 1882.^[6]

Samuel found Frances in Wisconsin in October 1883, and the couple returned to Illinois. ^[7] Samuel died in 1895.^[8]

Frances married widower William Outcalt in 1896. Frances spent the rest of their life with William in Rockford, Illinois.^{[9][10][11][12]} They went by "Frances C." during those decades.

Frances passed away on July 1, 1920 in Rockford and was buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Rockford.^[13]
