Biography

Sebastian and wife Elisabetha christened daughter Rosina in 1758. [1] The sponsors were Peter and Rosina Schäffer; Rosina Schäffer was Elisabetha's sister.[2]

In 1760, Sebastian and Elisabetha sponsored the baptism of Bastian, son of Peter and Rosina Schiffer, in the Reformed Church. [3]

Sebastian and Elisabetha christened daughter Elisabeth in 1761. [4]

Sebastian and Elisabetha christened son Johan Jacob in 1763; Jacob Ley was the sponsor.[5]

Elizabeth apparently died around 1765; Sebastian later married Catharina Brengel, daughter of Kilian Brengel. [6]

Sebastian and Catharina christened daughter Maria Susanna on 9 August 1767. The sponsors were Jacob and Gertraud Brengel, probably Catharina's brother and sister-in-law. [7]

Sebastian wrote his will on 29 October 1796, with a codicil on 29 June 1799; it was probated on 20 December 1802. The will names sons John, Thomas, Jacob, and Sebastian; daughters Rosina Boogher, Elizabeth Getzendanner, and Susanna Devilbiss; and slaves Ben and Pegg (a married couple), Caty, Sal, Phil, Lucy, Cot (?); the codicil also names slave Sandy, son of Pegg. Sebastian's wife Elizabeth is not named in the will, so she presumably predeceased him. The will also mentions a piece of land that is part of Taskers Chance. [8]

According to the records of Frederick Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sebastian died from "stone pains" and was buried on 27 November 1802. [9] His burial record gives his birthdate as 12 January 1727 and says that he married twice, the second marriage lasting 24 years and producing three sons and one daughter of whom two sons and one daughter survived him. [10] The record doesn't name either wife and doesn't mention children from his first marriage (who clearly existed given his will), but does name his parents as John Jacob Doerr and wife Maria Catharina.

I have a copy of the Historical Society of Frederick County Journal, Vol. II, November 1, 1991. It includes an article about Dearbought, the land bought by Sebastian Derr in 1755 in Frederick Co. The article was written by Jeannette Derr in 1950. I will send you the sheets if you can use them (free). Noland 588.
