Biography
JOHN CROMWELL DENT married Ellen Dean (daughter of Major James Dean and Harriet Christy of St. Louis, Mo.) who died in California. Married second Anna Amanda Shurlds of St. Louis (daughter of Judge Henry and Jane Burk Shurlds) died Carthage, Mo., 1889, had issue: William Bernard, born Dec. 20, 1861, St. Louis, Mo. [1]
He had no children with his first wife Ellen.
He is buried at the Bellefontaine Cemetery in Saint Louis, St. Louis City, Missouri.
Obituary: St. Louis. January Ist. — "Col. John C. Dent, brother-in-law of General Grant, died at his home in Carthage, Mo., early this morning, aged seventy-three years. Col. Dent served with distinction in the Mexican war and also in the war of the rebellion." [2]
