Biography

Martin Lascelles Dennys was born on 4 December 1841, with his birth registered in the 4th quarter of 1841 at Portsea, Hampshire, England. He was christened on 25 December 1841 at St Mary's Church, Portsea. He was the son of Nicholas Belfield Dennys and Mary Ann Martin.

In the 1851 England and Wales Census, he was at Saint John Hertford, Hertfordshire, aged 9, a scholar (possibly at a boarding school?)

On 13 January 1866 at St. John's Church, Upper Holloway, London, he married Leona Sophie L L P C Duncker. He was residing at Geelong, Victoria, Australia. The marriage was conducted by the Rev N. B. Dennys. They had children:

  1. Philip Charles Emil, 18 Oct 1867 (Geelong) - 9 Jun 1945, married Louisa Mary Vaux
  2. Arthur Vernon Lascelles, 1879 (London), birth reg. Volume 01A, Page 26, 1879 S Quarter, Kensington

On 3 December 1872, he was elected a Councillor for the North Ward of the Borough of Newtown and Chilwell, being the only candidate to fill an extraordinary vacancy. He was residing at Aphrasia Street, Newtown, Geelong.

On 2 March 1875, he appeared in court in Victoria as a witness representing the firm C. J. Dennys and Co., commission agents, Geelong.

On 6 July 1877, a public notice stated that he was leaving the partnership with Charles John Dennys and Edward Harewood Lascelles, which was styled Dennys, Lascelles and Company, operating as stock and station agents and woolbrokers. He was replaced as a partner by David Strachan, of Geelong.

In the 1881 Census of England and Wales, he was the head of a household at Hammersmith, London, aged 39, an estate agent, with his wife and two sons.

He passed away on 29 July 1918 at Providence Hospital, Seattle, King County, Washington, United States, aged 76, from cirrhosis of the liver. He had been working in the Circulation Department of the Times and residing at Central Hotel.

Research Notes

  • Although the death certificate says he was born on 4 Dec 1840, the birth registration and christening are both in Dec 1841. I've taken 1841 as the year of birth.
