Martin Lascelles Dennys was born on 4 December 1841, with his birth registered in the 4th quarter of 1841 at Portsea, Hampshire, England. He was christened on 25 December 1841 at St Mary's Church, Portsea. He was the son of Nicholas Belfield Dennys and Mary Ann Martin.
In the 1851 England and Wales Census, he was at Saint John Hertford, Hertfordshire, aged 9, a scholar (possibly at a boarding school?)
On 13 January 1866 at St. John's Church, Upper Holloway, London, he married Leona Sophie L L P C Duncker. He was residing at Geelong, Victoria, Australia. The marriage was conducted by the Rev N. B. Dennys. They had children:

On 3 December 1872, he was elected a Councillor for the North Ward of the Borough of Newtown and Chilwell, being the only candidate to fill an extraordinary vacancy. He was residing at Aphrasia Street, Newtown, Geelong.
On 2 March 1875, he appeared in court in Victoria as a witness representing the firm C. J. Dennys and Co., commission agents, Geelong.
On 6 July 1877, a public notice stated that he was leaving the partnership with Charles John Dennys and Edward Harewood Lascelles, which was styled Dennys, Lascelles and Company, operating as stock and station agents and woolbrokers. He was replaced as a partner by David Strachan, of Geelong.
In the 1881 Census of England and Wales, he was the head of a household at Hammersmith, London, aged 39, an estate agent, with his wife and two sons.
He passed away on 29 July 1918 at Providence Hospital, Seattle, King County, Washington, United States, aged 76, from cirrhosis of the liver. He had been working in the Circulation Department of the Times and residing at Central Hotel.

The Ballarat Star (Victoria), 3 Mar 1875, Page 4, Police, City Court via Trove, court hearings on 2 Mar [presumably at Ballarat]; Alleged Fraudulent Insolvency; Owen O'Connor, hide and skin dealer, was charged with defrauding his creditors; Martin Lascelles Dennys, of the firm of C. J. Dennys and Co., commission agents, Geelong, deposed that on 30 Jul 1873 he purchased hides and skins from the prisoner.
