Nathaniel Goodwin's "Notes"[1] supplied the birthdate of Sept. 9, 1638. Frank Starr[2] points out that there is no such birth date on record in the town. The date was mistakenly read, and was, instead, Sept. 9, 1658. Sept. 9, 1658, is the birth of this John's son, that is John3 (John2, John1.) Sgt. John Deming testified on August 25, 1682 and gave his age at about 50 years, which makes him born about 1632.[3]
If John the oldest son of John was born about 1632, was Honor Treat his mother? She was baptized Mar 1615/16[4]. Following the customs of the times she would have been born at about the time of her baptism, and would have been about 16 at John's birth and only about 15 at her marriage. There is also a seven year gap between John and Jonathan, plenty of time for the death of a first wife and remarriage to Honour.[5]
John was the son of John Deming and Honor Treat[6] he was known as Sergeant John Deming indicating he may have taken part in the Indian Wars of that time. From 1669-1672 he was a representative in the General court. He married Mary Mygatt on the 12 December 1657 in Northampton Masschusetts she was the daughter of Joseph and Ann Mygatt[7]
Sargeant John Deming and his wife Mary Mygatt were members of the newly formed Wethersfield Congregational Church in 1694. He died Jan 23, 1712, age 74, according to the church records.[8]

According to Savage, John Deming Jr. was bom in 1638, but the authority for this statement is not given. Hinman says that he was born in 1632, and if this earlier date is correct, he must have been bom before his father moved to Wethersfield. To distinguish him from his father upon the early records of the town, he is called "Sergeant John Deming," this title indicating that he may have taken part in the Indian wars of the period. In 1662 he became one of the selectmen of the town, and was Representative from Wethersfield to the General Court from 1669 to 1672. In 1694, he and his wife appear among the members of the church at Wethersfield.According to one authority, Sergt. John Deming was a packer in 1692. As he inherited his father's tools a few years later, it is possible that this was also his father's trade. His brother David, to whom his father first bequeathed his tools, and later withdrew the gift is described as a knacker, which is defined as a maker of small work, or a rope-maker. Perhaps both John and David followed the trade of their father, and the copyist has mistaken the word knacker for packer.[9]
Extract from the Will of John's father, John Deming Sr. dated June 26, 1690:[10]
