John was born in 1821.He passed away in 1896 and is buried on Old Mitchell Sanford Dekle's place in Candler County, Ga., 6 miles North of Metter, Ga.[1]
In the 1860 Federal Census he is listed as a farmer.[2]
From Ansel: "John was nick-named ‘Squire’ by his father, George Dekle, so that people could differentiate between his son and father, the Immigrant, when the name John Dekle was mentioned. The ‘Squire’ nick-name, John carried throughout his life. He ran a general store at the crossroads about nine miles north and west of Metter, Ga. In this store was a Post Office of which John was Post Master and, at the time, the store and immediate area near the store and Post Office were known as Dekle, GA. The children that were born in that area were listed as born in Dekle GA. Although the store, Post Office and Dekle, GA., do not remain today, there are quite a number of people still living that list their place of birth as Dekle, GA." John and his wife, Mary, are buried in the Dekle Cemetery which is located about five miles north of Metter, GA. This Cemetery is maintained by contributions from the descendants of John and Mary which are taken at the family reunions.[3]

Rhys, thanks for that update about Register. I've done family history on the Dekle family for years and never knew where the Dekle, GA crossroads were. I've driven through Register probably a thousand times at least but never made that connection. Where did you find that little tidbit? I'd love to know the source so I can add it to FamilySearch for John Dekle's record.
It was just where I happened to grow up and heard a lot about how it used to be Dekleville before they renamed it. Also the track of land I grew up on in close proximity to all the other Dekle's were held by one Dekle ancestor which came into the family by marrying into the Silas Bowen family which got the deed granted from King George. I believe the original land grant was 10,000 acres at least the way I heard it.
Remer Dekle, one of the sons of John and Mary Mercer Dekle, is my great-great grandfather. My paternal grandmother is Laura Pearl Dekle Franklin so there will no doubt be close DNA matches with some of the Dekle family. Britt Franklin, Columbia, Maryland
