Biography

Jemima Melissa "Mimie" Dees was born 20 Dec 1840 in either North Carolina or South Carolina. She was the daughter of Elias Malachi Dees and Mary Hamilton.[1] She was probably enumerated with them on the 1850 United States Census, Lancaster County, South Carolina, but because the enumerator only listed one initial for the given names of the members of the household, it is difficult to know which child was which. It is also difficult to determine which letter the enumerator intended. Because of her age in 1840, the ten-year-old female enumerated was most likely Jemima. FamilySearch has transcribed the initial of that person as an S, but it was more likely a J. According to the census record, all the children in the household were born in South Carolina.[2] Jemima Dees was enumerated on the 1860 United States Census in the the household of "Ely" Dees. She was nineteen years old and was working as a factory hand. The family was then living in Cumberland County, North Carolina. The enumerator of this census neglected to record the location of the children's births.[3]

She was married to Wilson Lockamy about 1862. The date is an estimate based on the age of their oldest of the four children shown in their household on the 1870 United States Census. In 1870 they were living in Lumber Bridge, Robeson County, North Carolina. According to this census, Jemima had been born in North Carolina.[4]

In 1880, according to the United States Census, Jemima and Wilson Lockamy and their ten children were living in Cumberland County, North Carolina. According to this census, Jemima had been born in North Carolina.[5]

When the 1910 United States Census was taken, Jemima Lockamy was living in the household of her daughter, Amanda, and son-in-law, Fred Drake, in Guilford County, North Carolina. At the time, Jemima was a widow. On this census, it was recorded that she was born in South Carolina. Also living in the Drake household were three of Jemima's children.[6]

Jemima Dees Lockamy passed away 10 Apr 1919 in Guilford County, North Carolina. Her cause of death was listed as cancer of the liver. She was buried in Buffalo Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Greensboro, Guilford County, North Carolina.[1][7][8]

Research Notes

  • What primary source is there for Jemima M. Dees' date of birth? According to Kathleen Dees Willard (d. 2016), the author/compiler of From England to the Carolinas 1835-2001: The Elias Dees Family, "...the names and dates of the children are recorded in the Holy Bible that is now in possession of descendant [possibly living] March 23, 2001..." A scan of the relevant Bible pages would be useful.[14]
  • Middle name sometimes seen as Melissa or Millissa in family trees on other genealogical websites. Source is needed.
  • Need marriage record.
  • Need to located family on 1900 United States Census. Possible location would be Durham, Durham County, North Carolina. She was listed in city directories there in 1899 and 1907.[15][16]
  • Are Alice Lockamy, daughter of Jemima M. (Dees) Lockamy, and Alice Lockamy, daughter of Jemima (Whitley) Lockamy, the same person or two different persons? Care should be taken to be sure before a profile is made for this child or a connection is made.
