Research Notes

Robert Turner, who has a 36cm DNA match with Brian Snell, a descendant of Sarah's grandson James William Hillier, advised that he searched the parish record for Westleton at Suffolk record office and found no sign of any Deed family but a Dade family was present at the right time. The baptism records for 1805-1809 are faded and many records totally illegible so no baptism for Sarah was found.

Based on others in the shared DNA cluster between Robert and Brian, Robert suspects the connection may be through the Flatt family, either legitimately or illegimately. His Flatt ancestors lived just eight miles from Westleton.

Biography

The master version of this biography is maintained at http://dorneyfamilyhistory.net/famtree_web/History_maternal.pdf

Sarah was born in about 1806 in Westleton, Suffolk.

Sarah likely didn’t attend school as she would later mark her marriage certificate with an X.

Sarah moved to London where she met William Hillier, a sawyer. They married on 6 May 1830 in the parish of Saint John, Clerkenwell.

They had five children together, William (1834), James (1837), Charles (1840), Sarah (1843) and Mary Ann (1845).

They lived at a number of addresses over the years, mostly around Islington. The known places they lived are covered in her husband’s chapter.

Sarah’s husband died in 1880, and in the 1881 Census she is recorded as a Lodger in the Chapman household at 21 Wellington Road, Islington. I cannot locate this address on modern maps.

Sarah’s profession was given as nurse, the first time a profession was recorded for her. In the usage of the time, nurse simply meant a carer of children, the sick or the elderly.

Sarah died at 7 Hides Terrace, Islington on 1 March 1891. Cause of death was stated as senile decay and the informant was Elizabeth E Woolley.
