Elizabeth was the daughter of Edward de Vere, 17th earl of Oxford.^[1]

Elizabeth married, on 26 January 1595 at the royal palace at Greenwich, William Stanley, 6th earl of Derby, the second surviving child of Henry Stanley, 4th earl of Derby, and his wife, Margaret Clifford; Elizabeth I, Queen of England, attended the ceremony.^[1] Elizabeth was rumoured to have affairs with Essex and Ralegh during the early years of her marriage.^[1]

Elizabeth and William had five children, although only three survived:^[1]

1. James Stanley, 1607-1651;
2. Robert Stanley, died 1623;
3. Anne Stanley, countess of Ancram, died 1657;

Elizabeth's husband gave her the administration of the Isle of Man in 1610. ^[1] She was the Lord of Mann from 1612 to 1627. Elizabeth Stanley was the first woman to rule as the island's head of state.^[2] Elizabeth II is the current Lord of Mann.^[3]

Elizabeth, Countess of Derby, died in 1626/7.^[1]
