Research Notes

This person has previously been shown as a de Vere, and daughter of Robert de Vere and Isabel de Bolebec. There is no reliable evidence that Ralph Gernon's wife was a de Vere or daughter of these parents.

The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography states that Robert de Vere and Isabel de Bolebec had just one child, Hugh.[5] The author of this entry has messaged the Magna Carta Project to state that extensive research into the de Vere family has failed to find any good evidence for a daughter called Eleanor.

Douglas Richardson[1] and Medlands[6] both state that they also had a daughter Eleanor who married Ralph Gernon. They cite Farrer's Honors and Knights' Fees, which states that "Sir Ralph [Gernon] was twice married, his first wife being Eleanor daughter of Robert de Vere, earl of Oxford..."[7] The citation given by Farrer is a Gernon pedigree in the 1899 volume of Collections for a History of Staffordshire which shows Ralph Gernon married first to "Eleanor dau. of Robert de Vere, Earl of Oxford" and second to "Hawisia (Tregoz)."[8] Tat pedigree gives no sourcing, and cannot be regarded as a reliable source.

A Gernon pedigree in William Farrer's Feudal Cambridgeshire does not identify the first wife of Ralph Gernon.[9]

Against this background, Eleanor was detached from her previously-shown parents, and her last name at birth was changed to Unknown.

There also appears to be no reliable source for the first name of Ralph Gernon's wife being Eleanor.

No, sorry, she’s not the daughter of Robert de Vere, 3rd earl of Oxford, and his wife Isabel de Bolebec. They had one son when Isabel was probably nearing menopause, and in 40 years of research on this family I have seen no evidence of a daughter of this couple. By 1215, Isabel would have been beyond childbearing age.

My credentials: Ph.D. in medieval history, 40 years as a professional historian.

Thanks Gina. We will look into this. This profile needs research and development by the Magna Carta Project and we will get to it eventually, but we have a huge to-do list, so no guarantees that it will be soon.

According to Robert's profile, both Richardson and Cawley believe she is the daughter of Robert and isabel. They may very well be wrong but, when in doubt, we go with Richardson unless there's other evidence to refute it.

ODNB agrees that Isabel had only one child later in life, we will look into that as well.

Thank you, Gina and Traci. As a holding operation, I have added research notes to this profile and to the profile of Robert de Vere, and asked a question in G2G, https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1328017/eleanor-de-vere-gernon. Having been focused on the issue, I think I have tracked down where the identification of an Eleanor de Vere as daughter of Magna Carta Baron Robert and as wife of Ralph Gernon has come from, and the sourcing for it does not look strong.

I am now detaching Eleanor from her parents and changing her last name at birth to Unknown, and adding research notes to relevant profiles.

for death date, best I found was her husband died 1274 (MedLands). She was his first wife; he had two sons by his second wife. So before 1274 is certain.

Magna Carta Ancestry (vol III, pp350-351, Peyton #2) doesn't give either birth or death date. Heir William b 1350. No date for 2nd marriage of Ralph to Hawise de Tregoz or date for either of their sons (John & Robert).

Removed Gernon-12, Gernon-15, Gernon-6, Gernon-10, & Gernon-40 as children due to lack of sources. Corrected Gernon-2's mother.
