Research Notes

Migration There is almost no documented evidence of early Portuguese immigrants, although their presence was recorded in the colonial census as far back as 1871. By the end of the nineteenth century, they numbered about 400. Two families are known to have migrated in the nineteenth century. The earlier of these were Emanuel and Ana (de Freitas) Serrão and their infant daughter Selena, who came to Australia from Madeira on the Alfred in 1824. They were commissioned by Dr William Redfern to assist him to grow grapes on his experimental farm, and their appointment was reported in the Sydney Gazette. This appointment only lasted a short time, as Dr Redfern returned to England in 1826. In 1828, Emanuel joined the Police force and in 1830 applied to Governor Darling for land at Brisbane Waters, but his application was refused as he was an alien. The Serraos remained in Sydney until 1852 and had 12 children. Selena married Jose de Silva of Funchal, Madeira, in Sydney in 1847. Emanuel and Ana left Sydney in 1852 for Warrnambool, where Emanuel died on the 29th September 1880. Their name was anglicised to Serong.
