Biography

Roll of Honor
Private Peter Dawe was Killed in Action during World War I.

Victor was born in 1926.[1] He was the son of William Dawe and Emma Bolt.

Sadly Victor's mother passed away in 1928 when he was only about a year old. He and his four siblings were separated, and Victor was brought up by family members on his mother's side. Most of his siblings emigrated from England to New Zealand.

When World War II broke out he enlisted, serving in the North Staffordshire Regiment "B" Coy., 2nd Battalion. As 18 was the minimum age for enlistment in the British Army he must have lied about his age when he joined up.

Tragically he was Killed in Action on 22 January 1944 in Anzio, Italy. He was just 17 years of age.

Burial

Anzio War Cemetery, Anzio, Città Metropolitana di Roma Capitale, Lazio, Italy Plot: I, L, 1.[2]

Inscription:

HE CONSIDERED IT AN HONOUR TO BE ALLOWED TO FIGHT FOR HIS COUNTRY

Peter as he was known by family is my uncle, my mother's youngest brother.

Apparently he joined the army at age 15, clearly lied about his age. I asked my uncle, Peters older brother who severed in the British Navy in WW2 how he Peter was allowed by his father to join up, reply was that my Grandfather who also served in the British army (from 1891 started at age 12 as a drummer boy, ended up as a Captain) that it was ok, unbelievably in today's times.

I have been told it was a land mine, while landing at Peter Beach, Anzio, that killed Peter and possibly 3 others on 22 January 1944, thank you for sharing the information and photos
