(The Cornishman, Thursday, October 7, 1886)
THE funeral of Miss Clara Davy, the much-loved daughter of Mrs. Humphry Davy, of Market-jew-street, Penzance, and the esteemed of a large circle of relatives and friends, took place on Wednesday morning, Sep. 29, at the Penzance cemetery, where her remains were placed with those of her father, one of the first to be borne to the new burial-ground of 30 years ago. Miss Davy, apparently in the enjoyment of the best of health, fell a victim to that scourge of modern days-consumption. She always looked so bright and happy, as well as so strong, that when fears about her health were first expressed, some months ago, those outside the family circle were incredulous. But Miss Davy's case was the old, old story-a cough that could not be checked, weakness, change of air, delusive and temporary improvements, a gradual wasting, fatal disease made clear to sorrow-stricken friends and patient sufferer, and death. The resignation and fortitude shown by this estimable young lady served to endear her yet more to those whose affectionate ministrations were with her through months of weakness and to the end. The coffin, of polished oak, was seen as it was borne from the home in Market-jew-street to the hearse, to be covered and festooned with wreaths. These came from Mr. T. S. Bolitho (Trengwainton) Mr. R. Davy, Mr. R. Branwell, Mrs. Humphry Davy, Mrs. and Mr. E. M. Davey, Mr. G. L. Bodilly, the Misses Branwell (Penlee) Mrs. Nicholas Harvey (St. John's-house) Mr. J. B. Coulson, Miss Quick, Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Harvey, Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Allen (London) the Misses Read, and Mr. Peter Roberts; while Mrs. William Coulson and Mrs. Richards and Miss Curnow sent crosses. The open hearse of Messrs. Champion and son conveyed the coffin to the cemetery, where the grave had been prepared by Mr. E. Hosking, and the chief mourners and friends made this cortege as superintended by Mr. Caldwell:-Carriage preceding hearse, Dr. Carne Rose and the Rev. A. W. Berry, who, in the absence of the Rev. Prebendary Hedgeland, read the burial service; 1st mourning carriage, Messrs. Humphry Davy, R. Davy, W. A. Ralph, and E. Davy; 2nd, Messrs. H. Davy, N. T. Tremewen, J. James, and Bromley Davy; 3rd, Messrs. J. M. Bromley, R. Branwell, F. Branwell, and R. Branwell, jun.; 4th, Dr. Davy, Messrs. G. L. Bodilly, J. Willey, and N. Harvey; 5th, Messrs. F. Ralph, W. Dennis, and James Dennis; 6th, Messrs. C. Reed, and G. Poole; 7th, Messrs. E. Smith, P. Roberts, &c. Several friends also joined in the mournful yet consolatory service at church and graveside.
