I'm exploring my family history. But also working to locate descendents of 28 enslaved people who were held by various enslavers at a particular geographic site in Maryland over the period of 1725-1864 --as part of a land history project.
I posted a check-in message a couple of weeks ago about the US Black Heritage Project to ask you about your activity with the project, but haven’t heard back from you. Do you still want to be in the project? If I don’t hear from you by next week I’ll assume that you’ve moved on to other things. You’re always welcome to re-join the project at any time.
I’m conducting the 6-month check in for the US Black Heritage Project. Because we are growing so fast, it’s not always possible for me to see what everyone’s working on.
I’d love to hear what you’ve been working on and if you are still happy being a part of the Heritage Exchange team. Members can change teams at any time.

We now have a project badge! Hooray! As soon as I hear back from you that you’d like to continue with the project, I will add the badge to your profile.
Emma, Thanks you for the ask. I'm working on volunteer project that's documenting land history for a private nature center property. As part of that history, I've documented the land ownership history of colonization from 1690 to the present. When investigating owners, I also discovered and documented the first names of 28 enslaved people by multiple enslavers who were part of that history. Some have loose associations and may be family units. I'm hoping that wikitree can be another tool to help uncover the stories of these enslaved people. I believe the nature center is a particular useful venue for telling the slavery story. I'm very much at the beginning of my use of wikitree for this purpose and was still trying to understand the preferred way to enter enslaved people's names when I only have first names. Then it seems I have to first create/discover enslavers' profiles (which for most I have good information for because they were prominent people in society) within the 'pre-1700' profile creation criteria.
Thanks for the check in. You don't have to create the slave owner profile before you create enslaved ancestor profiles. We just hope we can have both because in the end it can connect more people together. It sounds like you have an amazing project you're working on. Let me know if the project can help you document people on WikiTree.

I saw that you are interested in tracing a group of former slaves. This might be a good place to start:
