Biography

George Davis was born in Van Diemen's Land (1826-1856)

Peter George ("George") DAVIS, son of William Francis BLYTH and Susan JONES, was born on 9 December 1841 in Hobart Town, Colony of Van Diemen's Land, [1] was christened on 3 April 1842 in St. David's Church of England, Hobart Town, Colony of Van Diemen's Land, died on 26 July 1921 in Ballandella Street, Balranald, New South Wales, Australia [2] [3] at age 79, and was buried on 27 July 1921 in Church of England Cemetery, Balranald, New South Wales, Australia. [4]

George married Annie BRADBURY, daughter of Robert BRADBURY and Catherine McLAUGHLIN, on 6 August 1877 in Presbyterian Church, Moulamein, Colony of New South Wales. [5]

Annie was born on 10 October 1855 in Moulamein, Colony of New South Wales, was christened on 9 November 1856 in Church of England Parish, Orange, Colony of New South Wales, died on 30 September 1940 in Balranald, New South Wales, Australia at age 84, and was buried on 1 October 1940 in Church of England Cemetery, Balranald, New South Wales, Australia.

They had ten children: John, George Robert, Catherine Jane ("Kate"), Elizabeth Mary ("Lizzie"), James Patrick ("Jamie"), Annie, Ellen ("Nellie"), Alice, William Edward ("Willie"), and Margaret ("Maggie").

Most of their descendants who have had a DNA test are from the descendants of George and Annie's daughter, Catherine, who married John Thomas Eade. The Eade descendants match shared DNA with the descendants of William and Elizabeth Blyth.

    Death of Mr Geo. Davis. Snr.
    Another old resident of Balranald, Mr George Davis, snr., passed away at his residence in Ballandella Street on Tuesday night of last week, at the advanced age of 82 years. The late Mr Davis was born in Tasmania in 1839, and after spending a few years there, he went to Ballarat in the early days of the gold diggings, and after prospecting there he came on to Bendigo and then on to Moulamein and Balranald, where he settled down and resided until the time of his death - a period of nearly half a century. During the early part of his residence here, the deceased took a keen interest in public matters, and was for some years an alderman of the local Council. He also took a leading part in the dramatic society of a few years ago, and was a member of the town band, and led the first drum and fife band in Balranald. Deceased was also a life governor of the Balranald Hospital, an active member of the fire brigade in his early days, and a member of the Good Templars and Rechabite Lodges, to the latter of which he was secretary for ten years, and Deputy Chief Ruler. Deceased leaves a widow and grown-up family to mourn his loss, the members of the family being : George (Yanga, Balranald), Mrs Eades (Hillston), Mrs Wilson (Underbool, Vic.), Mrs Jones (Maude), Mrs Hurle (Tupra), Mrs Maskell (St. Paul, Balranald), Willie (Bendigo, Vic.) and Maggie (Balranald). The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon last, the remains being interred in the Church of England portion of the local cemetery, the Rev. C. A. Baker officiating at the graveside.
