Biography

William was born in 1866. He was the son of Samuel Davis and Roxanna Brown. He passed away 1958.

In 1896, Davis married Margaret Turner Schenk. Together they had four children:

  1. Margaret Brown Davis 18 Oct 1897, Fort Collins, Larimer, Colorado; d.abt. 1991 Berkeley, Alameda, CA
  2. William Schenk Davis, 30 Sep 1899, Fort Warren, Massachusetts; d.abt. 1989 Philadelphia, PA. Did not marry.
  3. Samuel S. Davis b.abt.1907 California; d. ?
  4. Alexander Dubois Schenk Davis b. 19 Jan 1910 Fort Strong, Massachusetts;, d. 7 Sep 1911 Letterman Hospital, Presidio, San Francisco.

William Church Davis (May 11, 1866 – September 23, 1958) attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, graduating with the class of 1890

He served as a Brigadier General during World War I. He commanded the 32nd Heavy Artillery Brigade during the war.

Davis taught military science and tactics at Colorado State Agricultural College.

During the Spanish–American War, he served as depot quartermaster at Fort Henry.

  • He was interested in genealogy. After retirement, he wrote The Ancestry and Posterity of Joseph Davis (1773-1865) of Norway, New York, and His Wife, Elizabeth Hallock Davis. (published in 1927) It has been shown to be a reliable and well-researched source.

He was the son of Samuel and Roxanna Brown Davis; June 12, 1890 graduated from West Point (15/54) and appointed additional 2ndlt., 5th U. S. Artillery Rgt. May 22, 1891 2ndlt., 3rd U. S. Artillery Rgt. Aug. 12, 1891 transferred to 5th U. S. Artillery Rgt. Sept. 9, 1896 married wife Margaret T. Schenck (1875 born in Iowa-1971) at Ft. Warren, Boston, Mass. March 8, 1898 1stlt, 6th U. S. Artillery Rgt. April 6-Sept. 1, 1899 regimental quartermaster; Philippine Insurrection; Oct. 29, 1900 capt., assistant quartermaster, volunteers; Feb. 2, 1901 transferred to Artillery Corps; June 30, 1901 discharged from volunteers; May 8, 1901 capt. 1910 maj. at Ft. Strong, Boston, Mass. briggen. commanded field artillery brigade with American Expeditionary Force; 1920 at Camp Lewis, Pierce County, Wash. 1921 retired as col. 1930 retired as briggen. 1942 retired as majgen. Children: Margaret B Davis, c.1898 born in Colorado-1991 died; William S. Davis, c.1900 born in Massachusetts-1989 died; Samuel S. Davis, c.1907 born in California; Alexander D. S. Davis, January 1910 born in Massachusetts-1911 died
