John E. Davis was born about 1837 in Buffalo, New York[1]. He trained with the famous 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry and served with the 55th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War.
At the time of enlistment, he was working as a cook and living in Niagara, New York. [2]
He is described as being 5' 5" tall, with a dark complexion.[3]
Military Service
During the Civil War, he enlisted as a Private in Company D of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. [2]
He transferred to Company A, 55th Massachusetts Infantry to act as the colonel's servant (groom).[4]
He died at Folly Island, South Carolina on 5 June 1864 of consumption.[4]
