Biography

Isaac was born 1741, died 1814 "in the 74th year of his life". He was Christened 21 Oct 1741 at First Church, Huntington, Suffolk, NY ^[1]

There are two markers at the Davis Family Cemetery, Coram. At least one of his children "Azel Roe Davis" is interred at the same cemetery.

His wife (almost certainly Hannah Roe) and the names of his other children, are matter of continuing research. See notes and sources below.

Lieutenant Isaac Davis served with Suffolk County, New York Militia during the American Revolution.

Isaac Davis is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A030331.

(R.W.) p324: Lt. Isaac Davis from Brookhaven. Served in Col. Floyd's Regiment. Possibly he served in Connecticut.

Name signed from Brookhaven the Association in 1775. B. 10-4-1741, D. 4-26-1814. Tombstone at Coram.

• An Isaac Davis appears on the 1776 census in Southold, showing his age as under 50 years and his wife over 16. No children are listed.

• An Isaac Davis signed as witness to the deed of Eliazer HAWKINS in 1788 (see wills A, p. 260) book D, p 96: Will is dated 27 May 1814 and proved 1 September, 1817. This WILL AND DEATH DATE ARE INCONSISTENT (will is dtd after death). This may be Isaac Davis of another branch of the same Davis family in Suffolk County. Research needed. Shows born abt 1738, but family gravesite says otherwise (Coram, NY)

26 Apr 1814 is the date inscribed on his headstone at the Davis Family Cemetery, Coram, NY. The records of Brookhaven's "Alpha List" suggest that Isaac's wife is Hannah Roe, 1748 - .; Roe Family Genealogy, repeated by Sweezey who has added death dates, provides the names of their children as:

1. Isaac Davis Jr., 20 Mar 1772, Brookhaven - 1786
2. Hannah Davis , 6 Apr 1774, Brookhaven - 1779
3. Anselm Davis, 22 Sep 1776- 28 Apr 1867; m. Abigail Overton. Union Cemetery, Middle Island.
4. Polly Davis, 2 Oct 1778, Brookhaven - 1779
5. Azel Roe Davis 1784- 13 Sep 1806; Davis Cemetery, Coram: headstone says "son of Israel".

However Long Island Surnames, [6] citing Suffolk County church, family, and Bible records, suggest that their children are:

They had: Ann Eliza Davis 25 Oct 1825 Mt. Sinai - 4 Dec 1859 Mt. Sinai, m. Daniel Woodhull Davis; Henrietta Sophia Davis 14 Nov 1835 Mt. Sinai - 16 Jun 1907 Stony Brook; m. Joseph Smith Hawkins. (This profile is currently associated with Timothy Davis and Elizabeth Jayne Davis-65782)

Find a Grave, citing both Long Island Surnames and apparently other un-named sources, gives Isaac;s children as:

It appears that researches have conflated and combined the descendants of the two Isaac Davis's known to exist in Suffolk County at the time.
