Biography

Thomas Davis was born in 1718, in Isle of Wight county, Virginia, a son of John Davis and Susannah Blunt. In 1752, Thomas married Hartwell Hodges, born April 27, 1727, in Isle of Wight county, Virginia, a daughter of Benjamin Hodges and Constance Goodrich. Thomas and Hartwell became the parents of as many as nine children. [1]

Thomas and Hartwell made their home in North Carolina, where he died September 29, 1764. His Will was probated in January, 1765, in Halifax county, North Carolina. [2]

Researchers Notes

The Church of the Latter Day Saints performs baptisms for the dead in honor of family members for whom no baptismal records are found. LDS Ordinance Data indicates that such a baptism was performed on May 6, 1966 and that Thomas Davis was "Endowed" by the LDS on July 21, 1966

son Frederick Davis - two upper tracts of land upon Sandy Creek in Bute County patented in my own name, also 132 acres adj. the aforesaid land on the south side, being a tract I bought of John Watson, also 100 acres I bought of John (Turil?) joining the said lands.

son Goodorum Davis - my land and plantation whereon William Davis now lives lying in Halifax County containing 200 acres and the land adj. patented by myself, and 700 acres in Bute County adj. Daniel (Na_?_)
wife Hartwell - my manner plantation containing 781 acres
son Dolphin Davis - 100 acres in Halifax County adj. my manner plantation, also one tract patented in my own name lying part in Edgecombe County and part in Bute County adj. James Ransom, George Portis & Lewis Davis

son Thomas Davis - my plantation on the North Side Creek that I got of John Watson in Bute County containing 170 acres, also one plantation adj. the same on the south side of said creek in the said county containing 170 acres, also one plantation containing 100 acres bought of Arthur Hatson adj. the said land on the (south?) sides of said creek, also 700 acres of land patented in my own name lying in the same county adj. the said lands and Benjamin Wheelison, the north side of the aforesaid creek, also 640 acres lying on the north side Red Bud Creek adj. Robert Hill in the aforesaid county & bought of John Watson.

son Arch Davis - all the land I bought of John (Huer? Fleur?) patented in my name, also the remaining part of the said tract contained in the same patent lying on White Oak Swamp, part in Edgecombe and part in Bute County, also all my land in Edgecombe Co. and that is patented in my own name and not before given or disposed of.
