Biography

William Thomas Davis was born 31 Dec 1850 in Missouri and he passed away 3 April 1928 in Craig County, Oklahoma. He is buried in the Willow Spring Cemetery, Ketchum, Craig County, Oklahoma.[1]

In the 1850 U.S. Federal Census, Schuyler County, Missouri, the family is listed as:

  • John G. Davis, a farmer, age 30 from Kentucky,
  • Susan age 25 from Missouri,
  • William T. age three months from Missouri, and
  • Thompson Edwards, a farmer, age 18 from Indiana.[2]

The 1860 U.S. Federal Census of Liberty Township, Schuyler, Missouri shows the family as:

  • John G. Davis, a farmer, age 41 from Kentucky,
  • Susan age 38 from Missouri,
  • William age ten from Missouri,
  • John age eight from Missouri,
  • Elizabeth age six from Missouri,
  • Joseph age five from Missouri,
  • Luna age three from Missouri, ange
  • William Cross, a farm hand, age 21 from Iowa.[3]

The United States, Veterans Administration Master Index, 1917-1940 shows the following infotrmation:

  • William T. Davis
  • Private, Battery K, 2nd Missouri Regiment Light Artillery
  • Born December 31, 1849
  • Englisted - January 25, 1864
  • Discharged - November 10, 1865
  • Died - April 3, 1928[4]

In the 1870 U.S. Federal Census, Liberty Township, Schuyler, Missouri, the family is listed as:

  • John G. Davis age 52 from Kentucky,
  • Susan A. age 49 from Missouri,
  • William T. age 20 from Missouri,
  • John M. age 18 from Missouri,
  • Elizabeth age 17 from Missouri,
  • Joseph C. age 14 from Missouri,
  • Luna B. age 13 from Missouri, and
  • Francis P. age six from Missouri.[5]

William T. Davis and Francis C. Ballard were issued a license to wed 3 July 1872 in the Deleware District of the Cherokee Nation, Indian territory. This license was executed and returned 9 September 1872.[6]

The 1900 U.S. Federal Census of the Cherokee Nation in the Indian Territory lists the family as:

  • William Davis age 50 born December 1849 in Tennessee,
  • Doode, wife, age 30 born November 1870 in the Indian Territory,
  • Bruce age 11 born August 1889 in the Indian Terriory,
  • George A. age seven born December 1893 in the Indian Territory,
  • Virginia age three born February 1897 in the Indian Territory,
  • Belle Rentfro, Boarder, age 15 born May 1885 in the Indian Territory, and
  • Bettie Rentfro, Boarder, age 11 born Jauary 1889 in the Indian Territory.[7]

As published in the The Vinita Daily Journal, 3 April 1928, Tuesday: W.T. Davis dies at Ketchum

  • William Terry Davis, 78 years old, died early Tuesday morning in his home at Ketchum following an illness of 14 months. Davis was a Union Civil War Veteran and a pioneer in this vicinity where he settled in 1871 and continued to reside until his death. As a soldier, he was one of the few left who attended the funeral of President Lincoln and fired the salute when the remains of that President were laid to rest at Springfield, Illinois...Davis was one of the few white men adopted by the Cherokee Indian Tribe and he served in both the upper and lower houses of the Council of the Cherokee Nation...Davis had not been able to leave his bed since receiving a stroke of paralysis in February 1927 since which time he survived numerous heart attacks...He was found dead Tuesday morning following a heart attack while his wife Mrs. Doode Davis, and their daughter Mrs. J.L. Wharton were the only ones present...Mr. Davis is survided by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. J.L. Wharton and Mrs. Virginia Brown, all of Ketchum, four sons by a previous marriage John and Bruce Davis of Ketchum; George Davis of Weleetka and William T. Davis of Kansas City, and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Reed of Ketchum.[8]
