Frederick John Dart was born on 4 June 1897 in Hopetoun, Colony of Victoria[1], son of Margaret Ann Dungey and William Charles Dart.
13 June 1916, Frederick enlisted in the Australian Imperial Forces (with his parents permission), Service number: 2303 and was assigned to 39th Battalion. He saw service in France, attained the rank of Private, was wounded in action on 30 April 1917, returned to Australia and was discharged on 5 April 1918[2].
