James Darcy was born in the Colony of New South Wales (1788-1900)
Birth
James Patrick Darcy was born in 06 January 1888 at Copmanhurst, New South Wales Australia. He was the eldest son of James Darcy & Bridget (Donnelly) Darcy. [1]
Around 1891, the Darcy family moved from Copmanhurst to Harwood Island, near Maclean, New South Wales, where James Darcy purchased land and grew sugar cane. The younger children were all born at Harwood Island and attended Harwood Island school.
World War I Service
On 19 January 1916, James enlisted to serve with the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) during World War I. He embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A18 Wiltshire on 7 February 1917 and served with the 26th Battalion in France and Belguim.
On 21 March 1918, James was transferred from the 26th Battalion to the Australian Veterinary Hospital at Calais, France. He cared for the horses at the hospital until his return to Australia. James sailed for home on the 'Sardinia' on 14 April 1919 and was discharged from duty on 22 July 1919.
James was stationed at Fort Lytton, Brisbane before being sent overseas during World War One. He met his future wife, Eleanor Mary Hooley Goodwin "Ellie", at a dance in the Wynnum area. James "Jim" and Eleanor "Ellie" corresponded with each other during James' war service. When James returned from the war, they reunited.
Marriage
James Patrick Darcy and Eleanor Mary Hooley Goodwin were married on 18 October 1919 at St Andrews Church of England, South Brisbane. [2]
Children
Jim and Ellie had two children, twins — a girl and a boy born in 1922 at Wynnum, Queensland, Australia.
World War II Service
On 17 March 1942, James Patrick Darcy enlisted and served with the Australian Army during World War Two. He was a Signalman — 1 lines of Communication Signals. James was discharged from duty 20 July 1944.
Death
James Patrick 'Jim' Darcy age 58, passed away on 10 August 1946 at Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. [3]
DARCY.— The Relatives of the late James Patrick Darcy (formerly 1st A.I.F.), of Wynnum Central, are invited to attend his Funeral to leave the Funeral Parlour, 45 Adelaide St., City. This (Monday) Afternoon, at 3.45 o'clock for the Lutwyche Cemetery. Private Interment. No Flowers.
MACLEAN, Mon.— Word was received at Maclean to-day of the death of James Patrick Darcy, of Brisbane, aged 58 years, a former resident of the Lower Clarence. Relatives were advised that Mr. Darcy died on Saturday. Deceased was the eldest son of the late Mr. James Darcy and Mrs. Bridget Darcy and was born at Harwood Island, where he received most of his schooling. He served in the 1914-18 war and had since been in the employ of the" Postmaster-General's Department. He married a Miss Ellie Goodwin, of Wynnum (Brisbane), who survives him, together with a twin son and daughter. Surviving sisters are Mesdames T. Collie (Harwood Island), R. Collis (Goodwood Island) and P. Bailey (Grafton). Brothers are Messrs. Thomas Darcy (Bundaberg), Edward (Queensland) and Michael (Harwood). [4]

The last name Darcy is spelt in a variety of ways (Dorcey, Darcey, Darcy). This is because sadly, James Darcy and his wife Bridget (Donnelly) Darcy received little or no formal education when they were young and were unable to read and write. [7]
