John was born in 1852. He was possibly born in Vinson, Clarke, Georgia, where his parents were living in th 1850 census.
In the 1860 census J S (age 8) was in Lemons District, Cobb, Georgia, United States.[1]
In the 1870 census John (age 18), At School, was in Subdivision 163, Newton, Georgia. He is shown with his brother Robert P, also at school. living in the Hamby household.[2]
John married Sallie E. Shipley on 5 November 1874 in Rockdale, Georgia, United States.[3][4]
In the 1880 census J (age 28), Warehouseman, was the married head of household in Conyers, Rockdale, Georgia, United States.[5]
In the 1900 census John (age 48) was the married head of household in Atlanta, Fulton, Georgia, United States.[6]
