Biography

Alphonse was born in Quebec in 1851.[1]

He lived in the US for 33 years at the time of his death, including 32 years in Chicago. Thus he immigrated to the US from Canada about 1879.[2]

On February 14, 1882 he and Annie Ortman had a daughter (name not given)[3]

Based on the family composition in 1900, the first daughter was Blanche, followed by Mazie in 1884 and Mary and Annie (twins) in July 1886. This record confirms his arrival in the US in 1879 and their marriage in 1880. His birthdate and age are incorrect as later records show him as 10 years older than Annie Ortman.[4]. Based on the 1900 census, no children were born between 1886 and 1900. Their son Roger was born the next year.[5] And no additional children were included on the 1910 census.

In 1910 he was listed in Calumet Township with his wife Annie (age 49) and son Roger who was age 8. Annie's maiden name is not given. The birth year matches, he and his parents were Canada French (commonly given for Quebec). He was a scalemaker, which matches his occupation given on the death record. They had been married 30 years. Calumet Township is not far from the location of his death in 1912.[6]

Alphonse died in the city of Chicago in 1912. His parents were named Roger and Caroline Roy (correct). No spouse was given and he was listed as single (not as widowed or married). His birth date was given as Sept 8, 1851 which is correct.[7]. The informant for his death was GP Bartlett (no relationship given)[8]

In 1923 his son Roger was married in Montana. No Dandurand family members attended.[9]

Anna died at age 80 in 1940. Her parents were given as John Ortman and M E Butler.

Research Note

  • No further records after his baptism were found for him in Quebec.
  • Could he have been married in Quebec before his immigration to the US in 1879?
  • There was an Alphonse who marries Elmire Roy but he was majority age and Alphone would have been only 16.
  • Same for the marriage of Pierre Alphonse in 1871, he would have been only 20 (majority age was 25).
  • The Alphonse who married in 1872 had different parents.
  • Same for the one married in 1873 and the one in 1877.
  • The next marriage in Quebec was 1887 and he had already moved to Chicago and married Annie Ortman.
  • There were two Alphonse Dandurand marriages of daughters named Rosa in Quebec but none that had a mother Anna as found in his 1910 census record.
