Biography

Claire Dan AM OBE was a Hungarian-Australian actress and dancer, and philanthropist, best known for founding the Sydney International Piano Competition.

Claire Dan AM OBE was born about 1920.

Claire was a cabaret dancer in Budapest, Romania after the Second World War. Her first husband of only six months was sent to a Soviet labour camp and she never saw him again. She then met and married cabaret entrepreneur, Peter Abeles, in 1947 in Budapest.

They moved to New South Wales, Australia in 1949 as refugees from encroaching communism. Claire was naturalised as an Australian citizen in November 1954. Unable to have children, Claire and Peter adopted two girls in the 1950s. Peter made his fortune in transport. When Claire and Peter divorced in 1969, she won life tenancy of their 23 Victoria Road, Bellevue Hill manor house Sundorne, beside Cranbrook School (purchased in 1958 for £60,000 ($120,000) the house and furnishings sold at auction in 2013 for $15.5M).

Following the divorce, Claire married Kenneth Ross in 1970 in Sydney. [1]

Claire was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) [2] and, in 1986, Member of the Order of Australia (AM) [3] for her work for charity and 'service to the performing arts', especially through the Sydney International Piano Competition which she co-founded in 1977. It soon became one of the world's most prestigious classical piano competitions.

Claire married a fourth time, to Michael unknown.

In 2008 Claire published an autobiography titled Ups and Downs.

She passed away, aged 92 years, on 22nd October 2012 at Bellevue Hill. [4] Beloved wife of Michael, loved mother of Micky and Roby and mother-in-law of Tom.
