Biography

US Black Heritage Project
Vina (Dalton) Hawkins is a part of US Black heritage.

Vina was born about 1822 in Stokes County, North Carolina, United States. Her death certificate says that her parents were named Adam and Mary Dalton.[1] She was enslaved in her early life. In the period before emancipation, she was enslaved by Joel Hawkins of Stokes County, North Carolina. She was the cook for the "big house" and her son Tap remembered her always keeping a jar of doughnuts and cookies in the kitchen.[2]

Vina was married to Patrick Hawkins and they began living together as man and wife around 1846.[3] They had ten children: Phyllis, Martha, Hetty, Gabe, Kit, William, Sam, Jack, Moses, and Tap. Their son Tap said that after the American Civil War, the family stayed on Joel Hawkins's land and sharecropped tobacco and corn.[2] In 1870, they were living in Snow Creek Township, Stokes County, North Carolina.[4] Vina's husband Patrick died before 1880. For a while after his death, VIna remained in Snow Creek Township, living with her children,[5] but by 1900, she had moved to Forsyth County, North Carolina with some of her children.[6][7]

Vina died on 17 May 1910 in Winston, Forsyth County, North Carolina.[1]
