Biography

John Dalton was born in Yorkshire, England.

John Dalton was born on 22 November 1811 and Christened at the Weslyan Chapel, Denby Dale, Yorkshire on 29 January 1812^[1][2][3].

John Dalton was the illegitimate son of Sarah Dalton^[1] and Joseph Wood as shown on John's marriage record ^[4].

John Dalton married Elizabeth Hinchcliffe on 11 April 1841, recorded as West Clayton Yorkshire (later known as Clayton West) ^[4][5].

An interesting coincidence is that the record of John's baptism appears on the same page as the baptism record of his future wife Elizabeth Hinchcliffe in the original Non-Conformist and Non-Parochial Register, 1567-1970, (see sources below)

John's occupation was a dyer (in the textile industry) as shown on the record of his marriage.

John Dalton passed away on 8 November 1863 at Skelmanthorpe, Yorkshire^[6][7] was buried at Scissett on 11 November 1863 (Record mentions High Hoyland but Scissett was in the parish of High Hoyland) ^[8].

Research Notes

The census records below refer to the family living at 'Cumberworth Half'. The 1851 Census refers to 'Gib Lane', which is in Skelmanthorpe, as shown in the 1861 Census. Before 23 February 1876, Skelmanthorpe came under the township of 'Cumberworth Half' ^[9].
