Biography

Colonel William Daingerfield was born circa 1740, in Essex county, Virginia. At the time of the American Revolutionary War, William was residing in Spotsylvania county, Virginia, established in 1721. The County was named for Alexander Spotswood, Colonial Governor of Virginia, who founded an ironworks in the early 1700s.

Colonel William Daingerfield was the Commander of the 7th Virginia Regiment, Raised on January 11, 1776, at Gloucester, Virginia, for service with the Continental Army. William served as the commander from February 29, 1776 through August 13, 1776. His successor was Colonel William Crawford. [1]

William is honored for his military service [2] by the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, as DAR Ancestor #A029576. DAR records indicate that William died September 17, 1781, in Spotsylvania county, Virginia and that his wife was Mary Willis. Applications for membership in the Society of the DAR have been made by the descendants of their daughter, Catherine Daingerfield, who married George Washington Lewis. [3] Note: William and others of his surname are found on the DAR website as "Dangerfield" with the disclaimer, "As such, the DAR assigns a single standard surname that covers variant spellings of similar surnames. While the surname may appear incorrect, this does not mean it is in error. This spelling system ensures that patriots are not established under more than one spelling."

Ex. wife Mary Dangerfield, Lewis Willis, Thomas Colson, Oliver Towles. Leg. wife Mary, plantation, etc. during life, then to sons William and Henry; son John, lands in Essex Co., but in case John dies before twenty-one years of age, then to son William and Spotsylvania lands to son Henry; to wife, equal moiety of all slaves, including slaves held by Mrs. Thornton, widow of Reuben Thornton, and the remainder equally divided among all my children, viz. John, William, Henry, Catherine, Elizabeth, Molly, Ann, and Sarah; daughter Catherine, wife of Capt. George Washington Lewis. (Page 409)[4]
