Biography

Robert Dailey is a part of US Black heritage.

Robert was born in 1897. He is the son of Mary Gaither.

1910 Asheville Ward 2, Buncombe, North Carolina; 48 Madison Avenue; Mary, widowed, was a cook for a private family. She stated she was the mother of 5 living children. Son Willie, a cook in a lunchroom and daughter Gertrude a cook for a family. Son Robert had no occupation. [1]

5 June 1918; WWI draft registration; Utica, Oneida, New York. Robert, living at 116 Hotel Street, stated his father had been born in Columbia, South Carolina. He was employed at Hotel Martin Co. on Bleecker Street in Utica. His nearest relative was his mother, Mary Dailey, living at 48 Madison Ave, Asheville, North Carolina. [2] Robert was inducted into the Army on 16 September 1918 in Utica in the 152 Dep. Brig. to 28 October 1918 then Co K Pion Infantry to discharge 18 December 1918. [3]

1920 Oneida, New York; 342 Catherine Street; Robert was bellman at a hotel, a roomer in the address. [4]

Robert married Anna Mae Coleman on 14 February 1925, in Herkimer, New York. His parents were William Dailey and Mary Goither(Gaither). Anna's parents were Benjamin Coleman and Cynthia Lowman.[5]

1930 Utica, Oneida, New York; 204 Fishman St; Robert worked as a porter in a retail store. His wife, Anna, was a chambermaid in a hotel. A child, Gloria Daily, may have been the daughter of Anna or born before the marriage of Robert and Anna. [6]Note: ages of Robert and Anna are discrepant to other documents or the ages they were when first married are incorrect.

The will of Mary Dailey was written on 25 June 1930. Her residence at the time was 221 West 115th Street, Borough of Manhattan New York. The will was probated on 3 December 1930 Buncombe, North Carolina. Named as Executrix and heir, daughter Gertrude Saunders. Mary named her sons Robert Dailey and Willie Dailey as heirs as well.[7]

1942 Robert again enlisted in the Army Military Service on 06 October 1942 at Syracuse, New York. His marital status was 'separated". He stated his employer was Camp Netchuntt Hunt New York.[8]His home address in 14 February 1942 on his WWII draft registration was W.C. 9 Letchworth Park, Portage, NY, a military camp.[9]

Unfortunately, Robert was discharged December 1944 after 2 years and one month active duty from the Military Branch: Field Artillery, after hospitalization for an active, moderately advanced case of tuberculosis.[10]
