John D'Arcy was born on 7 February 1767, the eldest son of James D'Arcy and Martha Grierson. He was christened on 11 February at Killucan, County Westmeath.[1]
He earned a B.A. degree at Trinity College, Dublin in the spring of 1789,[2] and married Emily Purdon, the daughter of a neighboring landowner, in 1801.[3][4] Emily died in childbirth within a year of marriage, and John remained a widower for the next 16 years.[5]
On 6 October 1817 John married Mary Anne Cary. In a letter he wrote to Mary Anne on 20 September 1817, just two weeks before the wedding, he said, "I trust you will never have to repent of the choice you have made."[6][7][8]
He was confirmed as Justice of the Peace (JP) for the county of Westmeath, in August of 1802, January 1807, and in July of 1838, and served as JP for county Meath in 1817.[10][11]
John, along with his siblings, inherited the estate of Hyde Park through his mother, who had inherited it from her uncle Joshua Palin. The estate included the lands of Anneskenane, Derrymore, and Brutonstown. John bought his siblings' rights to the estate, and in the 1820s and 1830s fought a lengthy court battle with the Crown over his right of ownership. He was eventually successful.[12]
John died at Hyde Park in 1846 and his estate was probated on 20 June of that year.[13]
Correspondence: The Hyde Park Papers include a collection of letters between John and Mary Anne Cary, beginning with the time of their engagement through the late 1820s, whenever one or the other was staying in Dublin.[14]
The Peerage Error: The Peerage gives, as their eldest daughter, Louisa Sarah Anne D'Arcy. This is incorrect. She was actually the daughter of John Samuel D'Arcy, Esq.
