Biography

Hendrick Cuyler, tailor, was born in 1673 (sic). His brother Reynier, button maker, resided at Amsterdam. Hendrick married, at New Amsterdam, Anna, daughter of Jan Schepmoes, and about 1664 went to Albany, where he acquired property. [1]

Immigration

Hendrick immigrated before 1660. He was in Albany abt. 1664. He bought a lot on the hill, on the east side of North Pearl Street near State Stree, west of Pearl "near ye Fort". After his death this passed to his son in law, Pieter van Brugh. In 1675 he made his brother Reynier, his attorney to receive certain property of Pieter Nicolass Gouverneur. [2]

Occupation

He was a tailor and in 1687 Alderman of Albany , Lieut. of Capt. DePeyster's company; in 1689 Captain of the Fort , Major and one of Leisler's Council . [2]

Marriage

Hendrick Cuyler bp. 11 Aug 1637 Hasselt and d. before 1 May 1690 New Amsterdam, son of Isebrandt Cuyler and Evertje Jansz m. about 1660 New Amsterdam Annatje Schepmoes dau. of Jan Jansen Schepmoes and Sara Pieterse, she was bp. 16 Feb 1642 New Amsterdam and d. before 18 Mar 1703 NYC[2]

  1. Johannes Cuyler, b. 1661 New Amsterdam; d. 20 July 1740 Albany, NY; m. 2 Nov 1684 Albany, NY, Elsje Ten Broeck, dau. of Dirck Wessels Ten Broek. Johannes Cuyler was a trader. He was a merchant and was Mayor of Albany, NY.
  2. Abraham Cuyler, m. Caatje Bleecker
  3. Sarah Cuyler, m. 21 Nov 1688 NYC Ref Ch, Pieter van Brugh
  4. Delia Cuyler, m. Johannes Groenendyke; she was a widow by 26 Nov 1707.
  5. Rachel Cuyler, m. Meyndert Schuyler.
  6. Maria Cuyler, b. 3 March 1678; bp. 13 March 1678 NYC Ref Ch; m. John Kruger/Cruger. He was Mayor of New York City.
  7. Eva Cuyler, m. Petrus Van Driesen.
  8. Henry Cuyler, m. 1 April 1710 NYC Ref Ch, Maria Jacobs, dau. of Hendrick Jacobs and Anna Fell.

Will

In his will he wrote:
"In the name of God, Amen. "Be it known that I, Henry Cuyler, on this March 21, 1690, in the 2d year of His Royal Majesty King William, being fully resolved to make my will and testament while I am in health." My whole estate is to remain in possession of my wife, Anna Cuyler, so long as she remains my widow. If she remarries she shall be obliged to give two thirds to my children, John, Abraham, Sarah, Delia, Rachel, Maria, Eva, and Henry. Over whom I appoint as tutors and guardians, [brothers-in-law] Geritt Vanderburgh, John Van Giesen and John de Wandelaire. My first born son shall have £10 more than the rest, my youngest son, Henry, shall have my Gold ring, my seal and a silver spoon. The above I have written with my own Hand." Witnesses, Captain Geritt Duyckinck, Ensign Peter De Mill [3][4][5][6]

DB Error 404 Marriage before birth

Updated the marriage year to 1660 as per the information in the Biography under Marriage. It was originally set to 1600 which is before Hendrick was born.
