Walter Cunningham was born in New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada.

Walter Maltby Cunningham was born on 14 May 1891 in New Westminster, BC. He was the son of James Cunningham and Marian DeBeck. ^[1]

Walter Maltby Cunningham, 22 y/o son of James Alex Cunningham and Marian Lee Debeck, married Jean Hazel Johnstone, 21 y/o daughter of William Arnott Johnstone and Belle Gillespie, on 14 May 1913 at the Church of St. John in Vancouver, BC. ^[2]

In a letter regarding their son Ted's death, Jean Hazel Cunningham writes In 1923, she and her husband Walter had separated and Walter had gone to live with his parents in Calgary where he got into trouble with the law by receiving money under false pretenses. Jean's father in law wrote to say that in 1926 he would support her in her bid to divorce Walter and gain custody of her two sons. In February of 1927, with the testamony of James Cunningham, Jean was granted divorce and full custody of the boys. After serving a sentence for his crimes in Calgary, Walter illegally entered the US and was living in Los Angeles, where he again was arrested for another similar crime. He escaped custody and returned to Calgary. By 1933, Jean had received a card from Walter who was back in Los Angeles and she had heard indirectly that he was again in trouble there the following year. That was the last Jean Cunningham ever heard of Walter Maltby Cunningham. ^[3]

Walter M. Cunningham MAY have passed away on 22 April 1937 in Los Angeles, California. He would have been about 46 years of age. ^[4]
